There’s about to be a new gold standard in wellness around Austin. With celebrity clientele from Alanis Morissette and Oprah Winfrey to Neil Patrick Harris and Diana Ross, Canyon Ranch began in 1979 with its flagship Tucson location and expanded to Lenox, Mass., a decade later. While the fan-favorite destination has since grown to include spas at the Venetian in Las Vegas and the Crescent Hotel in Fort Worth, the upcoming Spicewood location will be its third bona fide wellness resort, slated to open this September.
The Concept
Upholding the luxury and vitality of its original Tucson location, which was named the #1 Wellness Resort in the Americas by the Michelin Guide 2025, the new Central Texas iteration sits on 600 acres and will include 141 guest rooms as well as 134 family homes. At the bucolic property located 45 minutes from downtown Austin, guests can unwind in the spa or swim in the open-air canopy lap pool, enjoy stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking on the pond, hike and bike on 3 miles of trails, or work out in a fitness barn featuring movement studios, a yoga deck, and a recovery lab—just to name a few activities.
The Wellness Offerings
Featuring 37 treatment rooms, the spa will take over the title as the biggest in Texas, with 1.5 times more space than the reigning Trellis Spa in Houston. In addition to de rigueur facials and massages, the spa includes Eastern therapies, Ayurvedic services, and energy and metaphysical treatments. Luxuriate in whirlpools, steam rooms, and saunas, or just relax in one of the six lounges. Canyon Ranch Austin will offer more than 30 activities daily, plus special workshops and notable speakers. It will also be home to the Women’s Wellness Collective, a physician-led, mind-body-spirit practice that’s the first of its kind, tending to everything from menopause and postpartum care to sleep and hormone services.
The Cuisine
Boasting an award-winning chef with Austin credentials, the resort hired Val M. Cantú as its culinary director and chef-in-residence. The UT grad who had previously worked at Uchi relocated to San Francisco to become the chef and owner of Californios, the first Mexican restaurant in the world to have earned Two Michelin Stars. At Canyon Ranch Austin, Cantú will helm Estella, a seasonal Mexican concept emphasizing local ingredients that will be open to overnight resort guests and property homeowners. The resort also highlights a more casual dining spot, Flying X Café, overlooking the pond.
The Living Spaces
In addition to the luxe resort, the Central Texas location will feature a residential community with homes designed by award-winning Lake Flato Architects and landscaping by Campbell Landscape Architecture. Starting at $3.5 million, each ranch-style domicile will include a plunge pool, sauna, and cold plunge as well as an outdoor stargazing ledge.
The homes feature architecture and landscaping by Lake Flato Architects and Campbell Landscape Architecture, respectively.
